This Week’s Fleeting Fixation: I Love Hotels

Fleeting Fixations is on vacation this week, so we’re featuring all the things we love about hotels. Not fancy, 5-star joints but places like the Hilton Riverside here in New Orleans.

First thing I love: Hotel breakfast buffet. No matter where you go, the average buffet varies little. Omelette station, French toast, bacon and sausage in a chafing dish. There are some regional differences (biscuits and gravy, grits) but basically, this is a meal I’ve had dozens of times.

I love hotels!

This week’s Fleeting Fixation: Beautiful Oddball Cameras. Olympus Ecru, 1991. As much sculpture as product, the Ecru takes decent enough photos but is remarkable due to its form. Oddly-shaped, impractical, beautiful.

From Olympus:

“Ecru” is French for “unbleached.” The name of this concept camera was chosen to symbolize its intended role as a tool for living an intellectually enhanced life as natural as unbleached cloth. This concept is symbolized in the white body of the camera, which was sold as a limited edition of 10,000 units in Japan and 10,000 overseas.
